Veterans Day 2017 | A Prayer of Gratitude
Veterans Day is dedicated to American veterans of all wars. In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice was declared between the Allied nations and Germany ending World War I. Observed in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day by an act of Congress in 1954.
Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans, living or dead, but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country during war or peacetime.
Lord God, Almighty Father,
Creator of mankind and Author of peace.
We are ever mindful of the cost paid for the liberty we possess.
We ask You to bless the members of our armed forces,
both past and present.
Give them courage, hope and strength.
May they experience Your firm support, gentle love and compassionate healing.
Look kindly upon your departed who gave their lives
in the service of our country.
Be their power and protector, leading them from darkness to light.
Grant that through the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of your Son
they may share in the joy of your heavenly kingdom
and rejoice in You with your saints forever.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
To You be all glory, honor and praise, now and forever. Amen.
