Venerable Fulton Sheen on Tolerance

Image
"What is tolerance? Tolerance is an attitude of reasoned patience toward evil and a forbearance that restrains us from showing anger or inflicting punishment. But what is more important than the definition is the field of its application. The important point here is this: Tolerance applies only to persons, but never to truth. Intolerance applies only to truth, but never to persons. Tolerance applies to the erring; intolerance to the error. America is suffering not so much from intolerance, which is bigotry, as it is from tolerance, which is indifference to truth and error, and a philosophical nonchalance that has been interpreted as broad-mindedness. Greater tolerance, of course, is desirable, for there can never be too much charity shown to persons who differ with us. Our Blessed Lord Himself asked that we 'love those who calumniate us, for they are always persons,' but He never told us to love the calumny. In keeping with the Spirit of Christ, the Church encourage

Can You Name These American-Born Venerables?

Image
Church Pop has an excellent quiz all about the American-born venerabili. Their inspiring stories show us that heroic virtue is indeed possible regardless of our circumstances, abilities, class, or calling. How many of these venerables on the path to sainthood are you able to recognize? [See sample questions below.] Aided by his parishioners he founded the Knights of Columbus. The initial idea was to build a fund to provide financial assistance for immigrants, widows and orphans in case the head of the family died. Eventually, thanks to his tireless work and that of his parishioners, the Knights of Columbus grew into the largest Catholic service fraternity. Today the Knights of Columbus maintain their original vision in protecting the family, volunteering and providing financial assistance. She was born in Pennsylvania and was married to an Episcopalian pastor. Soon after they both converted to Catholicism, her husband insisted on becoming a priest. She renounced her marital ri

Venerable Fulton Sheen on the Devil: "As Theologians Dropped the Demonic, Psychiatrists Picked It Up"

Image
Venerable Fulton J. Sheen discusses the Devil's incessant attempts to turn our heats away from God. May we never forget that Satan, the father of lies, is a cruel deceiver of men whose only desire is our destruction. Below is a partial transcript of Venerable Sheen's remarks. Starting at 4:43: I thought perhaps you might be interested in hearing about the Devil from a sound philosophical and theological point of view. I'm going to describe to you the Devil, first from the psychiatric point of view, and secondly from the biblical. First the psychiatric. It is interesting that as we drop things in the Church the world begins to pick them up and distorts them. Now we, for example, the nuns drop the long habits, the girls put on maxi coats. We stop saying the beads, hippies put the beads around their neck. And, as theologians dropped the demonic, the psychiatrists picked it up. [Dr.] Rollo May of Rockefeller Institute has several chapters in his work on psychia

Venerable Archbishop Sheen's Family Seeks to Restart Beatification Process

Image
Venerable Fulton Sheen was an American archbishop who was renowned for his preaching and his work on television and radio. His cause for canonization was opened in 2002. In June 2012, Pope Benedict XVI officially recognized a decree from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints stating that Sheen lived a life of "heroic virtues" – an important step towards beatification – thus receiving the designation venerable. The cause of beatification of Archbishop Sheen was suspended in 2014, after the New York archdiocese refused to move his remains from the crypt of St. Patrick's Cathedral for transfer to Peoria, Illinois. The archdiocese contended that Archbishop Sheen wished to be buried there, and his family had agreed. The Diocese of Peoria, where Sheen was born and ordained to the priesthood has also laid claim to his remains. The family disputes both claims. This week, in an effort to restart the beatification process,  relatives of the archbishop filed a petition wit

Bishop Fulton J. Sheen's Reflection on the Wedding Feast at Cana

Image
Everyone is interested in a marriage. If the human heart does not have enough love in its heart, it seeks out those who are in love. The most famous marriage in history was at Cana, because Our Blessed Lord was present there. A marriage in the East was always a time of great rejoicing. The bridegroom went to the home of the bride, and in those days it was never the bride who kept the bridegroom waiting, but rather the bridegroom, as in the parable, who kept the bride waiting. The bride was veiled, from head to foot, to symbolize her subjection as a wife. Both partners fasted the whole day before the marriage and confessed their sins in prayer as on the Day of Atonement. Ceremonies began at twilight, for it was a custom in Palestine, no less than in Greece: To bear away the bride from home at blushing shut of day. The Cana marriage is the only occasion in Sacred Scripture where Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is mentioned before Him. It is very likely that it was one of her relatives w

Five Disturbing Things That Americans Learned About Planned Parenthood in 2015

Image
Life Site reports five truly disturbing things we learned about Planned Parenthood last year. To those in the pro-life movement, none of the revelations, however shocking, come as a surprise. We have long understood that Planned Parenthood as a business puts profits over people, especially women and the unborn – a fact Planned Parenthood knows and fully embraces as their business model. From the article: Americans learned a lot of terrible things about Planned Parenthood this year, but these five just might take the cake. When it comes to the abortion giant – who receives $1.5 million per day of our own hard-earned money – we can’t afford to turn a blind eye. The five most disconcerting things we learned about Planned Parenthood in 2015 are: 1) Planned Parenthood wants abortions to be "plentiful." 2) Planned Parenthood knows abortion takes the life of a baby. 3) Planned Parenthood actually does abort babies who could survive outside the womb. 4) Planned Parenth

Venerable Fulton J. Sheen — His Wisdom in 25 Quotes

Image
Venerable Fulton Sheen was an American archbishop known for his preaching and his work on television and radio. His cause for canonization was opened in 2002. In June 2012, Pope Benedict XVI officially recognized a decree from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints stating that Sheen lived a life of "heroic virtues" – an important step towards beatification – thus receiving the designation venerable. The following quotes are from Venerable Sheen, a pastor of souls of great breadth and wisdom. (Quotation #2 is far and away our favorite.) If you don't behave as you believe, you will end by believing as you behave. +++  Hearing nuns' confessions is like being stoned to death with popcorn. +++  Far better it is for you to say: "I am a sinner," than to say: "I have no need of religion." The empty can be filled, but the self-intoxicated have no room for God. +++  Too many people get credit for being good, when they are only being passi
