The Bible's Teaching Against Abortion

Image
Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, the moment of our Savior's conception.  Fr. Frank Pavone Reprinted with permission Via Priests for Life The Bible clearly teaches that abortion is wrong. This teaching comes across in many ways and for many reasons. Some people point out that the word "abortion" is not in the Bible, and that is true. Nevertheless, the teaching about abortion is there. This is the case with many teachings. The word "Trinity" is not in the Bible, but the teaching about the Trinity is there. In any case, a person who wants to deny the teaching about abortion would deny it even if the word were there. Let's look at some of the Biblical reasons why abortion, the deliberate destruction of a child in the womb, is very wrong. 1. The Bible teaches that human life is different from other types of life, because human beings are made in the very image of God.   The accounts of the creation of man and woman in Genesis (Genesis 1:2

George Weigel on a Pending Euthanasia Measure & the Culture of Death

Image
As the moral and linguistic confusions, subterfuges, and just plain falsehoods surrounding a bill to legalize physician-assisted suicide in Colorado graphically illustrate, euthanasia kills more than a disturbed human being facing life’s most challenging moment. The proponents of the culture of death are persistent and assiduous in their efforts to undermine and replace Christian values. George Weigel, Distinguished Senior Fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, in an article for National Review Online , explains what is at stake as Colorado voters prepare to decide on Proposition 106, the "End-of-Life Options Act," that would legalize physician-assisted suicide in the Centennial State. Weigel notes that the citizens of Colorado should bear in mind the unintended consequences and implicit dangers of such a law. He writes: "The more apt mot about all of this lethality masquerading as compassion, however, is from the quotable quotes of... [Fr.] Richard John N

Father Pavone: NARAL Can't Win Against Ultrasound, Science and Common Sense

Image
From, the National Catholic Register , comes this article by Father Frank Pavone that is both commonsensical and compelling. He begins with a quote from Justice Kennedy, writing in part: Respect for human life finds an ultimate expression in the bond of love the mother has for her child….While we find no reliable data to measure the phenomenon, it seems unexceptionable to conclude some women come to regret their choice to abort the infant life they once created and sustained. Severe depression and loss of esteem can follow. — Justice Anthony Kennedy [ Gonzales v. Carhart , April 18, 2007] The abortion industry and its apologists have tried for decades to persuade us that the baby in the womb isn’t a baby.  NARAL, for instance, took exception on Twitter to a Doritos ad that aired during the Super Bowl that, in their words, tried to "humanize" the child in a mother’s womb. A Twitter storm of derision for NARAL followed. Science, common sense, and the ultrasound images

Life and Liberty

Fr. Frank Pavone As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, we should reflect on what our Founding Fathers did when they established this nation. Their concept of liberty was rooted in dependence upon God. The Founders held that it is only when God is seen as the source of our right to life can that right be secure from tyrranical governments who would threaten it. That is why the Declaration of Independence says that the right to life is bestowed by the Creator, and that governments exist to secure that right. Can anything be more American than to work to restore this foundation of our government, and to secure the right to life? Let us be fearless and unashamed to say we are pro-life, and to teach others that our American independence demands it.

Latino Priest Questions Sotomayor Nomination

Staten Island, NY – Fr. Victor Salomon, Director of Hispanic Outreach for Priests for Life, said today that the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor does not merit automatic support from Latinos; rather, Latinos and all Americans should carefully scrutinize her views on abortion. “What would be the value of having a Latina Supreme Court justice who wants to uphold rulings that have taken the lives of millions of Latino children?” asked Fr. Salomón. “My fear is that this nomination may be great news to those who think it’s OK to abort babies at any time for any reason, but not for those of us who want to share the positive values of Latino culture. ”Fr. Salomon, originally from Venezuela and a priest since 1998, works with Rachel’s Vineyard Ministries to assist women suffering from the spiritual and emotional effects of abortion. Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, added, “The fact that we know little of Judge Sotomayor’s positions on abortion means we need to find o

Two Years After Federal Ban of Partial-Birth Abortion

Fr. Frank Pavone On April 18, 2007, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the federal ban on partial-birth abortion, without the loophole of a health exception. This is an important step forward in Constitutional law toward the ultimate goal of restoring protection to every unborn child. In partial-birth abortion, the birth process itself is hijacked and turned into an instrument of killing. This corrupts the role of the physician and blurs the line between abortion and infanticide. The Court said that this line should not be blurred. The Court rejected the arguments of the abortion industry that the ban should be struck down because it lacks a health exception. The Court said that the abortion supporters failed to prove that the procedure is as necessary for health as they claimed. Visit Father Frank's blog here .
