Pope Francis alluded to the forthcoming canonization of Pope Paul VI during a meeting with Rome’s parish priests at the Lateran Basilica this month, stating: "Paul VI will be a saint this year." On February 6th, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints approved the second miracle needed for Blessed Paul VI to be named a saint. It is believed that said canonization could take place in October. Pope Paul VI was born Giovanni Battista Montini in the village of Concesio, Italy, on September 26, 1897. He is remembered for seeing the Second Vatican Council to its conclusion and working to enact its provisions. In 1968 he authored the encyclical Humanae Vitae , which affirmed the Church’s teaching that artificial birth control is gravely immoral and contrary to marriage as conceived by God. The Lepanto Foundation, an international foundation based in Rome that aims to defend the principles and institutions of Christian civilization, is reporting that Pope Francis has authorized a commission to 'reinterpret'  Humanae Vitae  'in the light of Amoris laetitia .' Should it lead to the sanctioning of artificial contraception by the Church it would constitute heresy – a fact the report itself acknowledges: "On the subject of contraception, Paul VI expressed himself in Humanae Vitae , in a manner which theologians judge as infallible and thus unmodifiable, not because the document in itself had the requisites of infallibility, but because it reaffirms a doctrine always proposed by the perennial Magisterium of the Church. Douglas Farrow, the Kennedy Smith Chair in Catholic Studies at McGill University, writing for First Things last month , asks whether the papacy of Pope Francis is driving the Church toward schism. The confusion surrounding Amoris Laetitia has resulted in a diversity of understandings based upon the subsidiarity judgment of individual priest and prelates. Seeking clarity, four cardinals issued a dubia asking the Holy Father to answer questions about his post-synod apostolic exhortation. Pope Francis has yet to answer the dubia. Consequently, prelates worldwide have interpreted Amoris in radically different ways . The dual purpose of sexual union is unitive: the bonding of spouses in greater love and intimacy, and, procreative: to collaborate freely and responsibly with God in the transmission of human life so as to be open to the blessing of children. Pope Paul VI’s seventh and last encyclical, Humanae Vitae affirms the Church’s long held prohibition against artificial contraception. Therefore, "any action which, either in anticipation of the conjugal act or in its accomplishment, or in the development of its natural consequences, proposes, whether as an end or as a means, to render procreation impossible" ( Humanae Vitae 14) is a sin against "the wise institution of the Creator to realize in mankind His design of love." July 25th marks the 48 year anniversary of the publication of Pope Paul VI's landmark encyclical Humanae vitae (Of Human Life: On the Regulation of Birth). Days before his death, Padre Pio, thinking of the Audience which the Chapter Members of his Order would have during their General Chapter, wrote a letter to Pope Paul. In it, he expressed his adherence to the Magisterium's teachings, particularly mentioning the recent encyclical, Humanae Vitae . From the Catholic News Service : Italian newspaper, Il Messagero , has published a newly rediscovered booklet written by then Cardinal Karol Wojtyla in 1968 to help couples implement Pope Paul VI's encyclical Humanae Vitae . The text, entitled "Rule for Spouses," was never made public outside the Archdiocese of Krakow, but was recently discovered by a student from the John Paul II Institute for Life and Family in Rome, Catholic News Agency reports. The booklet will be officially presented on April 24, but on Thursday Il Messagero published a full version in Italian, as well as Wojtyla's introduction to the Rule on its website (in Italian). In his introduction, Wojtyla wrote that "the present Rule sprouts from a series of pastoral experiences with some married couples and, at the same time, from the marriage experience of couples themselves."
